Often, it can be seen that the greatest innovators initially set out to create a product or service that they, themselves, need. Addy, the entrepreneur behind the luxurious yet bold CBD tea brand, DOSED, is a true testament to this. Based in Austin, Texas, and supplying high vibe teas across the United States, Addy has taken all of the ups, downs, and in-between moments that life has thrown her way, to create a CBD tea line for those who desire a holistic way to relax and unwind. Each DOSED tea is organic, infused with 10 milligrams of CBD, and steeped in love. I am so excited to introduce you to Addy, and invite you to read along and learn all about the heart behind DOSED.
Mia: Hi Addy! So, before we get into all things Dosed, I’d love to learn a little bit more about you and your background. Have you always called Austin home?
Addy: I grew up in Austin, left for ten years, and then came back about two years ago. My family lives here so it is really nice to be near them while also getting to enjoy the weather, football games, and live music. My husband and I moved from Portland, Oregon where it rains about 9 months of the year. We absolutely love being outside and spend a lot of time exploring Austin on foot with our two little dogs.
Mia: What has your personal journey with CBD been?
Addy: I was first introduced to CBD in 2012 when I moved to Portland. I was on a serious cocktail of heavy pharmaceutical medications to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD and I found an amazing naturopath who helped me taper off of these medications and replace them with more natural remedies, like cannabis.
Over time, I recognized a significant pattern of seeking out blends of tea to comfort me through major events in my life. But, the grocery store tea aisle was overwhelming: too many options, and not enough “daily drivers” that were functional. At first I just set out to create a better, more simple line of tea. This then evolved into “dosing” that tea with CBD, which alas, got me to launch DOSED with a line of five CBD-infused teas.
Mia: Your teas are beautiful. Number 3 is my favorite. What was the process of starting Dosed like for you? Was there any specific education or job experience you had that gave you the confidence to start?
Addy: Actually yes, and it was not what I would have expected at all. I started college in 2008 during the financial recession and decided to go the “safe” route and get my degree in Finance even though I would have much rather majored in studio art. So, my professional life has mostly been spent working in finance at some incredible companies like Adidas, Nike, and Smith Optics. I got my MBA at night and I was splitting time between Italy, New York, and Portland and having the time of my life. Ultimately, a series of events led me to look for a role in Austin, Texas. To make a long story short, I applied for a finance role, and ended up running the supply chain- which I had absolutely no experience in. I went with it, scratching my head the entire time secretly wondering how on Earth I got there.
The job was horrible, I was absolutely miserable and it was the most toxic place I had ever worked. However, I learned so much and it was the final piece of my “professional puzzle” that gave me the confidence and experience I needed to take the leap into finally starting my own business. I will forever be grateful for my most horrible job experience.
Mia: Wow! It is so amazing to see how even the moments we perceive as negative help get us to where we are meant to be. Are there any books you enjoyed reading while building your business?
Addy: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh, You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, and every single book by Brene Brown.
Mia: Did you have a great support system in your life when starting this venture?
Addy: Yes, absolutely. My husband, family, and friends have supported me throughout the entire process and I am so grateful for it. However, I still constantly have to filter out the doubt from the ones I love most, and focus on me and my vision.
Mia: What advice do you have for someone starting a business?
Addy: Make sure you want to be your own boss. Trust yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you “this is the way it’s done.”
Mia: I love that. Thank you for sharing all of this with me Addy. Last question, and always my favorite, what is your ideal self care routine?
Easy! Long walks in the morning, baths, drinking 5+ cups of tea a day, journaling, manifesting, and sleep.
